The Life-Changing Power of Words

I'll never forget the beautiful woman who gave me my first Craniosacral session. It was Jill Mabry who first helped me understand the negativity trap I was in. Every response that came out of my mouth during our hour together had a ho-hum undertone. It seemed as if every word I said had a diabolical plan to keep my from finding health and happiness. Those precious sessions gave me insight on how changing the tone of my dialog could affect my body and even my life.

The next few weeks I would catch myself. It seemed like I was addicted to negativity. Even when something great happened, I would sabotage it with pessimism. It took work, but soon I was speaking positively and seeing the repercussions of that in my mood, appearance, and actions.

Today, almost 14 years later, my skills in speaking positively have helped me achieve more than I ever imagined for myself. I am a successful Craniosacral Therapist, entrepreneur, and business marketer. That's a long way from the shy and depressed person I used to be! By being positive and speaking positively (and yes, lots of help from God!) I broke out of the old cycles that kept me sick, hurting, and scared to immerge from my "safe place".

Here are some words to focus on to help you on your way:
I can...                            I have...                              I am...
passion             devotion
faith                  beauty
confidence         wisdom
discipline           trust
generosity         conviction
safety                hope
compassion        love
courage             acceptance
care                   humility
honesty              genuine
inspiration           joy
sincerity              balance
kindness             peace
belief                  strength
perseverance       gentleness

In Health!

4 Steps to Being Happy

We all do it. Even though we may have it all, women still seem to struggle with feeling down in the dumps. Just yesterday I was driving down the road on the way to buy groceries for dinner. I had my healthy family at home, money to purchase my meal, good friends on their way to spend the evening, but somehow I found myself feeling overwhelmed and unhappy. There was no particular reason for me to feel that way, just an overall feeling of melancholy. Here is how I turned that frown upside down:)

Positivity. I focused on what is good, what is going right in my life. When you remind yourself of all the reasons you have to be happy, you are actually forcing your brain to forge new paths. We have neural pathways in our brain, roads that connect our neurons. When we are predisposed to being negative, those negative pathways are well traveled. Think of a path through the woods where many travelers have passed. It is much easier to travel on a well worn path than to forge a new one with machete in hand. It's the same for your brain. If you "train" your brain to travel down the positive thought trail instead, that path will become easier and easier to use. https://socialanxietyinstitute.org/social-anxiety-chemical-imbalances-brain-neural-pathways

Breath. Many of us are shallow breathers. Throughout most of the day we are only using 1/3 of our lung capacity. When you breath deeply, you bathe your cells in oxygen rich blood. When your cells are healthy, you body is more balanced. A low oxygen level also affects your brain's ability to function, which affects memory, concentration, and even mood. I like to take slow deep breaths to combat anxiety or mood swings, and fast short breaths to re-energize when I am tired.

Food. Nutrition is so important for your mood. When we are depleted, we are not only starving our stomach, but our brain and entire body. Chemically and physiologically, our body needs nutrients to supply essential keys to health. A balanced diet is a huge piece of the puzzle, however, soil depletion has changed the nutritional content of the food we eat. An apple a day today would not supply the same nutritional value as an apple 40 years ago. It is important to supplement your diet with vitamins. Not just any vitamin will do, I take vitamins that replicate the way minerals are bound in plant fibers. This way my body recognizes that they are food, so I actually absorb them. http://www.melaleuca.com/oligoresearch

Exercise. When we exercise our brain produces feel good chemicals. We generally don't feel motivated to work out when we are feeling down, but simply taking a walk and raising your heart rate can do so much to make you feel better.

There are plenty of ways to turn the dial on your smile meter. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • aromatherapy
  • volunteer/help someone
  • call a friend
  • play with my cats
  • play a game with my kids
  • HUGS!
  • Craniosacral or massage treatment
  • take a bath
  • go for a walk
  • dance
  • go on a date with the hubs

Before I started working with Nicole, I felt pain every hour of every day. My feet, knees and low back kept me from playing with my grandsons and volunteering. I thought that it was all part of getting older. After one session, I felt a huge relief from the discomfort. After just six sessions, I was ahead of the curve and moved onto a maintenance schedule. Best of all, I am able to go on a hike with my grandsons and wear nice shoes at my charity galas.

As a single mother, I work long hours to support my family. For months I suffered from neck and shoulder pain that put my job in jeopardy. After just one treatment with Nicole, my pain was 90% GONE.  I was amazed at how effective one session could be!

My (planned) second pregnancy brought on (unplanned) stress. Unlike my first pregnancy, I now had a toddler to care for, my 40 hour a week job, and a house to manage on top of dealing with my growing belly. When I learned that Nicole was offering a Pregnancy Program, I got started right away. Giving myself the time and space to prepare mentally and physically for my second baby has been the best gift I could give to myself and my family.

Structure In Balance?

I recommend Chiropractic to many of the clients I see, especially for backs, neck, and headaches. The fact is I can treat all day long, but if the skeletal integrity is off, the muscles and soft tissues attached to them will  be in dysfunction. In like manor, I believe that people can be adjusted on a regular basis, but if they do not also address the soft tissue attached, those vertebra will continue to pull them out of alignment. It is all about BALANCE.

I have been receiving Chiropractic since I was 16 years old (first car accident) . In that time I have seen a few Chiro's and appreciated the difference between them. Some Chiropractors will only adjust your atlas and axis (the first two vertebra in your neck). They believe that if those bones are aligned that the rest will follow suit. That doesn't seem like a balanced approach to me. Sometimes my low back is out and I need a lumbar adjustment, no bones about it. I have seen Chiropractors that put you on a payment plan and schedule you weekly treatments from here to Kingdom Come, I don't see that as a balanced approach either. I feel that too many adjustments can make you hyper-mobile, meaning the more your vertebra are moved, the more they will move (to me that's just common sense, talk to Newton about that)

Several years ago I was introduced to a lovely couple, Frank and Nasly Lopez, owners of Team Lopez Chiropractic. This Dynamic Duo balanced each other out so well. Frank, being well rooted in Sports Chiropractic assessed my body each and every time I came to the office, adjusting even my wrists, shoulders, hips, or ankles if they were out. Frank's wife Nasly treats pregnant mothers and children with a very gentle approach, she's always good for a hug as well. They are quite literally a life-saver to me on a regular basis when my body gets out of alignment. Their philosophy seems to be focused on getting people better, then
providing maintenance. They have grown their practice from the word of mouth referrals of people like me who appreciate what they have to offer, now THAT'S a balanced approach.

If you are experiencing back, neck, hip, shoulder pain, headaches, or joint pain in general, take a look at what treatments could help bring your body back in balance. My regimen includes Chiropractic, Massage, and Craniosacral Therapy, along with self treatment of yoga, aromatherapy, and breath. These tools are a dynamic combination that keep my body going strong. That's good news for my clients:)

My Journey

7 car accidents.

Yep, you heard right. Seven of them. Not ALL my fault, but most. In 15 years, my body had whiplash 7 times. Chiropractic and massage had helped where doctors could not, but I still had chronic, nagging pain and headaches that kept me from doing the things I loved. After over a decade of giving others relief through massage therapy, I hit a wall. I could no longer push my way through people's tissue. It HURT.

I realized that I was only going to have this one body for the rest of my life and I wanted to be able to USE it. I invested in the healing hands of Craniosacral Practitioners and let healing take place in the root of my issues. Massage and chiropractic gave me some relief, but my tension and headaches always returned. It wasn't until my body was given the opportunity to release that tension in my nervous system that I had true freedom.

In the course of my journey, I have complimented receiving bodywork with the self practice of breath, aromatherapy, and journaling. By partnering with my caretakers, I took ownership of my wellness. I am so humbled to be able to share my experience with amazing women like YOU.
